The danger of civil unrest in Britain amid the country’s worsening cost-of-living crisis has been warned about by money-saving expert Martin Lewis, independent reported on Nov. 10.
The popular TV presenter and founder of MoneySavingExpert admitted that he is “scared for people” as inflation in the UK continues to skyrocket.
In the interview, Lewis spoke about people’s desperation as households are now struggling to pay for essentials.
“We need to feed people. We need to keep them warm. If we make a mistake right now, we’ll get to riots. When the breadwinners can’t provide, anger and civil unrest breeds – and I don’t think we’re very far from that,” he said.
He said the situation has become so desperate that his money-saving website has been forced to create a new feature that gives advice on how to keep warm without heating.
“I’m a little sick of it. We’re talking about heating pads in sleeping bag territory,” Lewis said. – This is one of the richest countries in the world. It’s pretty desperate, isn’t it?”
British households are set to lose £900 this year due to a “historic fall” in living standards, according to PwC’s latest report on the UK’s economic outlook. Those on the lowest incomes will face a £1,300 hit to their finances.
